Leasing Office California Style

I'm in the process of completing a residential leasing property renovation in Rancho Palos Verdes... oh the beach! One of the elements I'm working on is a leasing office that went from dark to delicious! A splash of blue popped off the white washed and neutral foundation. I paired two similar colored rugs in different patterns for a chic beach twist. And ALL the furniture seen here (aside from the floor lamps) was custom.

Hand Painted Cobalt Blue Stencil

For this project the client didn't want to deal with the hassles of a wallcovering so we did a tone on tone stencil. The background is slightly darker than the foreground. I find a more chic application is to use more similar colors than contrasting. Especially if relaxing is the idea of the room!

This recent residential project had a few forgotten spaces that needed attention. A few simple items balance this little nook without cluttering it. The delicate chair balances the heavy armoire, the painting adds a dreamy color spash and the hide rug grounds the airy space.

I come to find out through another source that Sir Elton is actually afraid of purple and so he jumped across the color wheel to this green. And you thought color selection was arbitrary?

Kid Cafe Designed by Tokyo-based studio Nendo Plays on proportion. The Big sofa in the back tricks the eye, it's actually a playpen for the wee ones! But the design begs a bigger question, why are American's so resistant to well designed kid focused establishments? Chuck E Cheese? Come on! We can do better than that. Let's train our youth to have a better eye and imagination!

I designed this bed recently for a rock and roll studio. Double stitching detail and tufting add another layer of lux to the charcoal leather bed. The oversized headboard acts as a backdrop to the side lamps.

Inspired by the hotel’s location, the garment district, each chair takes inspiration from a different type of fabric: knit, fur, and ruffles.

Last night Frette in Beverly Hills showcased a few fantastic LA designers. Moura Starr's Meredith Xavier and Martyn Lawrence-Bullard vignettes were my personal favorites. All I can say is that sleeping never looked so good. I'll dream tonight of affording one of the silver fox throws....

Benjamin Moore Trends for 2010

Last night I attended a color trend lecture by Benjamin Moore. It's hard to write about color since the impact can only be achieved by experiencing color. What I can say is that I learned a lot of about finishes. Yes, we all know matte is always better, but did you know that for brighter pigments you need to slap on up to five layers of paint? Think about that before painting your dining room that seductive red you've been eyeing. The good news is that there are new technologies that get the pigment to stick more evenly in the resin. Their new Aura line is more expensive but they guarantee two coat max, no matter how bright the color! Oh yeah, desaturated purple is the next beige in 2010. Signing out from the future ;)
